In 1907 there was a sudden serge of Indian songs or intermezzos. This at least produced many colorful and quite artistic song sheet covers and even a few good songs. They had obviously nothing to do with Indian culture except for a drum like tempo.
Thurland Chattaway did the lyrics and naturally Kerry Mills did the melody, although in this case Thurland did not appear on the credits. Mills did a few other Indian songs that bombed.
I have a particular fondness for RedWing because my dad played it constantly on the piano. It was his favorate and mine too, and was the first song I learned to sing by heart when I was 8. My dad also played for the silent movies and Redwing was a good filler.
RedWing quickly sold at least a million copies. The cover art is nice.
