Eastern
Oregon is a wide open land with hot summers and cold winters. It
is dominated by the ever present Deschutes River that flows from the
high country in the south finally emptying into the Columbia just east
of The Dalles. It is a river that has more bends than a million
rattlesnakes. Often used by the Indians as a rich source of food
and irrigation it has many spots reserved for fishing by the indigenous
populations.
Leaving
The Dalles on 197 we passed by the little hamlet of Dufur known only as
the town that John Kennedy gave special praise to when he said "Ask
not what Dufur can do fur' you, but what you can do fur' Dufur.
The
town of Maupin sort of wraps around the river but there is a side road
that takes you up to the White River falls near Tigh Valley.
