Crater lake is in southern Oregon and it is the deepest lake in the U. S. It forms a caldera or crater, that is, the remains of a big mountain called Mt. Mazama that blew up big time about 7000 years ago and basically disintegrated leaving this huge hole that filled up with rain water.
One of the more amazing thing about the park is that there are no guard rails on the roads leading up to the park. Going up you can look down to huge drop-offs far below, and then look up to solid steep hills. The blast was so hot that it melted the sides of the caldera into glass which explains its ability to retain water. The picture here shows a hill of glass.
Crater Lake was to me a life event. It demonstrates the incredible power of a single natural phenomenon. It is a journey well worth taking.
