The Auburn House

215 N Street S.E. Auburn WA.

I bought this house in 1980 for $67,000.  It was probably the worst time to buy a home because interest rates were 10%.  My wife wanted the place because it had a big lot that extended all the way back.  Later it was subdivided and another house was built on the back lot.  Too bad because there was a real nice shed on the easement which had to be removed.

I have many memories of that house.  The back part was added before 1980 and a hallway, bathroom and big bedroom were installed.  The man who owned it originally was a doctor and as the story goes, his wife died in that hallway.  The doctor also had a bomb shelter built under the house.  After his wife died he couldn't live there anymore and sold it to a young artist couple.  They soon divorced and had to sell.  That's when we bought it in 1980.

I raised my two kids in that house so I have lots of stories.  My biggest story was about the haunted hallway.  I used to tell my kids that I would hear whispers sometimes late at night.

That year we got our first VHS player and watched our first actual VHS movie "The Bells are Ringing".

The kids used to sneak out into the living room late at night and watch MTV because the back bedroom was so far away.

The bomb shelter offered no end of excitement.  There were ghosts down there and secret tunnels and spider webs.  Every halloween we had a party for the kids and their classmates.

I divorced my wife in 1990 and she got the place.  I think she was able to sell for $100 thousand or so.
