The Beast Beam

When we got our house the kitchen was enclosed on two sides.  I removed the sides but left the shelf island which was anchored to the ceiling at one end and to the wall on the other side by a long ugly beam which had originally supported a sliding door.  My long desired intention was to remove this beast beam.

I finally got around to removing the beam and attaching the shelf to the ceiling.  To do so I first installed a brace to prevent the shelf from moving and then cut the beam out.  I attached another beam to a ceiling rafter using a steal plate on one side and steel angle on the other side for strength.  Looks much opener now.
