The Changeling

During the middle ages, legend held that it was never safe to leave any infant unattended, especially at night (probably a real good idea even today).  At that time it was believed that witches and goblins came under cover of darkness and snatched the unprotected little infant away and substituted in its place a changeling, a creature so hideous that it was impossible to be loved.

However not too much later the witches and goblins began to run short of changelings, so they started using basset hounds.
