When I was in the Army we packed a lot of wheel bearings. In fact every time our unit went on manouvers we came back and packed wheel bearings. There were around 40 vehicles in our battery’s T.O.N.E. (equipment allocation) and every month we had an alert (practice war game) because the nasty East Germans were just up the road so that meant that every month we had over 150 wheel bearings or so to re-pack. The wheel bearings did not need it but we did it anyway just to do something.
Now in
all honesty, I was in survey but I always liked to keep busy and so I used to
meander over to the motor pool after an alert and help out packing wheel
bearings. They appreciated it and returned the favor in various ways (of
course). But I learned how to pack an awful lot of wheel bearings.
